This research project will count as your only test grade for the marking period. Use the guidelines and websites below for your research.
You will be researching a Sexually Transmitted Infection using the Center of Disease Control and Prevention website (see links).
You can choose from the following STI's:
HIV
Gonorrhea
Syphilis
Chlamydia
HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)
Pubic Lice (Crabs)
Herpes
Bacterial Vaginosis
Trichomoniasis
Your paper must include the following information:
1) A brief description of the STI
2) Signs and symptoms of the STI
3) How the STI affects the systems of the body
4) How the STI is transmitted
5) How the STI can be treated
6) List a facility/clinic on Staten Island that will help treat this STI
The next portion of the research project has to do with behaviors that increase an individual's chances of getting an STI. You will be gathering data about the prevalence of these behaviors among New York City teenagers. You will use the Youth Risk Behavior Survey to find this information. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey is conducted by the Center of Disease Control every two years to assess the risks teenagers take and the dangers they expose themselves to. Using the website below, answer the following questions:
• Use the website www.nyc.gov/health/epiquery
• On the center of the page, click on the link, “Youth Risk Behavior Survey (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005)”
• Select the year (2005) and a survey measure under "Sexual Behavior"
• Click Submit *on the next screen "Refine Your Search” by borough AND grade OR race/ethnicity.
Continue to do this for the different survey measures and answer the questions below:
Give specific statistics (percentages) with your answers:
1. Ever Had Sex:
How does Staten Island compare to the other boroughs in terms of teenagers having sex?
