"Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens." John Homer Miller

Violence and Injury Prevention Lesson 2: Reducing the Risk

How can an individual reduce the risk of unintentional injury?
Do now: Group work: Create a list of 6 places where you spend most of your time.

(Home, school, parties, in community, playing sports, in cars).

Each person has a responsibility to be safe and consider the safety of others whether at home, at school or in the community. Acting responsibly, developing safety plans and practicing safe behaviors, can reduce the risk of injury.

Staying safe involves good decision-making skills. Making the wrong decision increases the risk of injury to yourself or others. In every situation there are opportunities to evaluate risk, predict the outcome of possible decisions and make the safer choice.

The Decision Making Model
Determine the decision to be made
Evaluate the alternatives
Consider the consequences
Identify values
Decide and act
Evaluate the outcomes

As a teenager, you need to take responsibility for developing your own safety plans and taking action to keep yourself safe.
