Sexual Health Lesson 8: Refusal Skills and Delay Tactics

Aim- How can an individual use refusal skills to support their abstinence choice?
Do now- Using refusal skills worksheet

Homework:Turning off the pressure worksheet

Often times it is usually better to say no to offers you don’t like. Sometimes people feel confused about how to say now or may not have the courage to say no to their friends. Without time to think of what to do, they can impulsively make a poor decision. In these cases, people should use alternative actions or delay tactics to gain time to think about what they really want. Remember, sooner or later you have to give a clear message.

Class notes:
Alternative actions- suggest an activity that gets you out of the situation, suggest an activity that is positive, fun and realistic.

Delay Tactics- say or do something to break the mood or cools down the situation say or do something that gives you time to think.
*Make a delay statement
*Take a delay action
*Create space
*End the situation quickly
*Build the relationship (if appropriate)

The goal is to end the interaction as quickly as possible and not let it drag on. Hand out the worksheet, Possible Delay Tactics

Discuss how students can use alternative actions and delay tactics to support their abstinence choice.
